My son's and my very favorite book together has to be
Paddle to the Sea by Holling C Holling, but planting a
box in its honor in our area wouldn't be nearly as
neat as planting one in the area where the book took
place - Lake Nipigon Country in Canada, all the Great
Lakes, Niagara Falls, St. Lawrence River. Soooo..
I'm wondering if I might plant an idea in someone's
head in the Northern states who may want to ponder a
box on this wonderful book?
It's about a little Indian Boy near Lake Nipigon who
carves a little wooden canoe with a little man carved
into it. He sets his little canoe (called Paddle to
the Sea) free as the Spring thaw begins near his home,
hoping that it will journey all the way to the
Atlantic Ocean. The book is about the little canoe's
journey and all the people and things it met along the
way. Needless to say, it is so geographically
oriented that planting it in East Texas just wouldn't
be right!
If this has struck someone's interest, but they
haven't read the book, we might be able to work out a
loan of the book, if their library doesn't have it.
It's a fairly short read, BTW.
